LS-DYNA on 128CPU’s

Simpact have up-scaled their compute capability to meet the demands of our largest and most detailed CAE models by running LS-DYNA3D on 128CPU’s. Until recently, we have been making use of our own local hardware but with the requirement to run the largest vehicle models and represent structures with unusually small finite elements, Simpact have teamed up with OCF Plc (See www.encore-hpc.co.uk) to make use of High Performance Computing on demand. Their EnCore service is based on the ‘Blue Wonder’ Linux based system which has 8,192 CPU/cores and is based at the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council in Daresbury. This computer is listed as one of the Top500 supercomputers in the world. (See www.top500.org)

As part of the incorporation of the facility with our compute network Simpact carried out benchmarking to assess the performance of the system and investigate the up scaling of the MPP version of LS-DYNA3D. Benchmark models include the well-known Chrysler Neon car-to-car vehicle model which is available from LSTC and benchmarked in detail by www.topcrunch.org. The graph and figure below shows some of the results from the benchmark exercise.
